퍛VICTORY OVER DEVIL – IN CHRIST

요 10:10 - 요 10:10

(10)도적이 오는 것은 도적질하고 죽이고 멸망시키려는 것뿐이요 내가 온 것은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라 (10)The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.                                               John10:10

Christ Has Won The Victory Over the devil.  The devil is at work. He seeks to sow seeds of doubt into the heart of God’s people. He suggests to us that God’s gracious foundation for our faith can be destroyed. This is nothing new. It’s as old as Genesis 3:1 – “Did God say … ?“ The devil says to us, “Has God really forgiven your sins?” He says, “Has God really saved you?”

The devil wants to get us on the run. He wants us to run away from him. We must not let him get the upper hand. We are to resist him in the strength of Christ’s victory over him. When we “resist the devil” in the strength of Christ’s victory, “he will flee from us” (James 4:7). To believe the devil is to believe the lie. The truth is that, when take our stand in Christ, the devil has no alternative but to flee from us. Christ’s victory over the devil becomes our victory that Christ has won the victory over the devil. Through faith in Christ, His victory becomes our our victory over the devil.

Here are three important lessons concerning this victory.
1) Through His death on the Cross, Christ has won the victory over the devil. He has won this victory for us . 2) On the basis of the victory that Christ has won for us, we can stand our ground against the devil.

3) When we take our stand in Christ, the devil can do nothing else but flee from us. He is strong when we try to stand against him in our own strength. When, however we remind him of Christ’s victory over him, he can do nothing but bow before Christ’s superior power. Rejoicing in the victory that Christ has won for us, let’s remind the devil that he’s a defeated enemy.

God’s Way of Salvation (Psalm 11)
1In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?  2For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.  3If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?  4The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

5The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.  6Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.  7For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

Psalm 11:1-7

요일 3:8 - 요일 3:8

(8)죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이니라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이니라 (8)He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.    I John 3:8

Victory Over The World, The Flesh, and The DevilTRADITION: To win over the enemies of your soul "You must (grit your teeth) and exercise additional will power and intestinal fortitude" TRUTH: To win over the enemies of your soul you must allow God's power to be exercised by faith.
We learned of God's plan for victory over the first two enemies of our soul, the world and the flesh. The last and most powerful of the three enemies is the author of all sin and wickedness the devil himself.

Although he wields great power as "the god of this world", and can be transformed to appear as an "angel of light" and also commands a large company of vicious demons, we as born-again the Bible way Christians can have victory over him through our Lord Jesus Christ if we obey and follow the simple guidelines recorded in Scripture.

We must return to Paul's "Book for the Battle", the book of Ephesians. His summary and outline for the book is found in the commands of 6:10,11. The third of these commands gives us the ammunition we need for victory over the devil: "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil".

With this powerful enemy of our soul we must "stand against" him, "resist him steadfast in the faith" (I Peter 5:9), "resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). All of these significant commands of Scripture are rooted in the same Greek word meaning "to take a position in the battle, to oppose, to fight with a great struggle".

How do we oppose, resist, stand against, taking a position in the battle as we fight the devil? By first putting on the "whole armor (literally: all the weapons) of God"! How do we put on the whole armor of God? By putting on the Lord Jesus Christ who is described here in the specific pieces of armor. It is an action of simple childlike faith! Through faith we must have "our loins girt about with truth" our vital spiritual lives protected by Him who is Truth (John 14:6), the Lord Jesus Christ!

Then we must have "on the breastplate of righteousness" the righteousness of the One who is our Righteousness (I Corinthians 1:30). Our spiritual feet must be "shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" through Him who is our Peace (Ephesians 2:14). Taking the "shield of faith" the spiritual shield of faith is found in Him who is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

The spiritual "helmet of salvation", only through Jesus can we have salvation for "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved."(Acts 4:12) In this next piece of armor lies the secret for the putting on of all that went before. The Sword of the Spirit is the very source of our faith, for "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."(Romans 10:17)

The powerful Sword of the Spirit is the source of our faith and through it, we gain all that is necessary to perform the supernatural fetes of faith in winning the battle with the forces of darkness! This all powerful, liberating Word must be consumed and digested through memorizing and meditation, engrafting it into our entire being! The Lord Jesus gave us the key for victory in the very beginning of His earthly ministry when He quoted Old Testament Scripture to the devil during His temptations.

He did not quote it once nor twice but three times He defeated the devil with precise quotations from existing Scripture to provide us with the supreme example for victory over our most formidable foe! Apart from utilizing the living Word of God in our battle with Satan there is no guarantee of victory, but if we obey the repeated admonitions found in the Bible to literally hide the Word of God in our hearts, we can have victory through the Living Word, our Lord Jesus Christ!

The final piece of armor mentioned is the method whereby we commune with the King and put all the other pieces of armor in position by faith! Prayer, without it we would be still in our sin! It was prayer that brought us to the foot of the Cross, it was prayer that gave us the ability to cry out to God in repentance as we laid hold upon salvation by faith in what Jesus did to pay the penalty for our sin as He bled and died for us upon the Cross!

Yes, prayer, the humble utterance of faith brought us to salvation and now brings us to Him who alone can save and deliver us from the presence and power of this evil author of sin! "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit". – v17

If we are willing to follow God's specific formula for victory over each of the enemies of our soul we will by faith experience the peace of God that passes all understanding through Christ Jesus our Lord!

Victory over the "Wiles" of the Devil

This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it!
I would like to share with you some thoughts that I believe will help you in your spiritual warfare against the enemy of our souls. Many of you know that I love pastor Rick Renner's Sparkling Gems from the Greek. I would like to share with you some of his thoughts today.

**N.B.> Pastor Rick Renner's Sparkling Gem
"If you want to fulfill God's plan for your life, there's one thing you must not do: Don't forsake the daily fellowship and encouragement of other believers! Hebrews 3:13 tells us that we need to "...exhort one another daily..." But what does it mean to "exhort"?

The word for "exhort" that is used in this verse comes from the Greek word parakaleo. It is a compound of the words para and kaleo. The word para means alongside, and the word kaleo means to call, to invite, to speak, or to beckon. When these two words are compounded into one, it gives the picture of someone who has come closely alongside of another person for the sake of speaking to him, consoling him, comforting him, or assisting him with instruction, counsel, or advice.

Because it is so helpful when someone comes alongside to support you in this manner, this word is often translated in the New Testament as the word encouragement. Jesus used the word paraklete, a derivative of the word parakaleo, to describe the Holy Spirit as the "Comforter" in John 14:16. (Mentoring enables you to do the right thing because your mentor is walking through it with you. The Holy Spirit is your Comforter and Mentor.)

These verses make it abundantly clear that we need to both give and receive encouragement from other believers on a daily basis. This is such a vital principle that the tense used in the Greek language calls for continual action. In other words, we are not to just encourage one another once a week; we are to make this a matter of lifestyle. We must get into the habit of encouraging one another, doing it so often that it becomes a daily practice!

I John 3:8

"Put on the whole armour of God against the wiles of the devil."   In Ephesians 6:11, Paul explicitly tells us how the devil operates. He writes, "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." I want you to especially pay attention to the phrase "the wiles of the devil."

The word "wiles" is taken from the word methodos. It is a compound of the words meta and odos. The word meta is a preposition that means with. The word odos is the word for a road. When the words meta and odos are compounded into one word, as in Ephesians 6:11, it literally means with a road. You've probably already figured out that the word methodos is where we get the word "method." Some translations actually translate the word methodos as the word "method," but the word "method" is not strong enough to convey the full meaning of the Greek word methodos.

Let me make the meaning of this word real simple for you. As I said, the most literal meaning of the word "wiles" (methodos) is with a road. I realize this seems strange, but when you connect this to the devil as Paul does in Ephesians 6:11, it means that the devil is like a traveler who travels on a road. He is headed in one direction and has one destination.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. If you're going to take a trip, the logical thing for you to do is get a map and chart your journey to your destination. You don't take just any road; rather, you strategize to find the best and fastest way to get where you're going. Right? It would be pretty foolish for you to jump in the car and take off with no sense of direction. Taking any road could lead you in a multitude of wrong directions. It's just better to use a map and stay on track. Correct?

This is precisely the idea of the word methodos. The devil isn't wasting any time. He knows where he wants to go. He has chosen his destination. Rather than mess around on a bunch of different routes, he has mastered the best way to get where he wants to go. He is not a mindless traveler. And when he arrives at his place of destination, he has one main goal he wants to accomplish: He wants to wreak havoc and bring destruction. Therefore, we must ask: "Where is the devil traveling, and what does he want to do once he gets there?"

Paul answers the question about Satan's destination in Second Corinthians 2:11 when he says, "we are not ignorant of his Satan's devices." Pay careful attention to the word "devices" in this verse. It is the Greek word noemata, a form of the word nous. The Greek word nous describes the mind or the intellect. Thus, in one sense Paul is saying, "we are not ignorant of the way Satan schemes and thinks."

But the word noemata also denotes Satan's insidious plot to fill the human mind with confusion. There is no doubt that the mind is the arena where Satan feels most comfortable. He knows if he can access a person's mind and emotions, he will very likely be able to ensnare that individual in a trap. One writer says that the word noemata not only depicts Satan's scheming mind but also his crafty, subtle way of attacking and victimizing others' minds.

I personally like this because it identifies the primary destination of the devil — to get into a person's mind and fill it with lying emotions, false perceptions, and confusion. It was for this reason that Paul urged us, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5).

고후 10:4 - 고후 10:5

(4)우리의 싸우는 병기는 육체에 속한 것이 아니요 오직 하나님 앞에서 견고한 진을 파하는 강력이라 (5)모든 이론을 파하며 하나님 아는 것을 대적하여 높아진 것을 다 파하고 모든 생각을 사로잡아 그리스도에게 복종케 하니 (4)(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) (5)Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ,

II Cor 10:4-5

The words "bringing into captivity" are from the Greek word aichmalotidzo, which pictured a soldier who has captured an enemy and now leads him into captivity with the point of a sharpened spear thrust into the flesh in his back. The captured enemy knows that if he tries to move or get away, the Roman soldier will shove that spear clear through his torso and kill him. Therefore, this captive doesn't dare move but remains silent, submissive, and non- resistant.

However, when Paul uses the word aichmalotidzo in this verse, he writes in a tense that describes the continuous action of taking such an enemy captive. This is not a one-time affair; it is the lifelong occupation of this soldier. He constantly has a spear in his hand, and he is always pushing it against the flesh of an enemy's backside as he leads him away to permanent captivity.

Because the devil loves to make a playground out of your mind and emotions, you must deal with him like a real enemy. Rather than fall victim to the devil's attacks, you must make a mental decision to seize every thought he tries to use to penetrate your mind and emotions. Rather than let those thoughts take you captive, you have to reach up and grab them and force them into submission! You must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ!

But if you're going to beat the devil at his game, you have to put all your energy into taking every thought captive. If you're not really committed to seizing every thought the devil tries to inject into your mind and emotions, he'll strike you again! So once you make the decision to do it, stick with it. It's time for you to take charge of your thoughts and drive his lying insinuations right out of your brain! Blessings.              - Pastor Rusty

Victory Over the Devil, the Five R’s: Rejoice

                                                 - Pastor Michael Stahl

“R” word, Rejoice.

We’ve repented of sin; we’ve renounced the lies the devil would tell us; by God we’ve reclaimed. what we’ve lost and we’ve been refilled with the Holy Spirit as we’ve yielded our sinful will and hearts to him. And in all this we’ve been proclaiming our victory we have over the devil because of Jesus. What’s left? Just one thing to carry from here: Rejoice!

The word rejoice as it is used in the New Testament is from the Greek word _____ (chairo) and it means to be glad; to be delighted.1 What can we be glad about? What can we be delighted about? For that, let’s go to our Epistle reading today, 1st John chapter four, verses one through six. The quickest way for you to find 1st John in your Bible is probably to start at the end of the New Testament and work backwards.

So why do we rejoice? We rejoice because of what John tells us in these verses. Once again, we’re looking at chapter 4, verses 1 to 6, especially verses 4, 5, and 6: Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God:

Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. What do we have to rejoice about?

!!! There are three in VICTORY : One, (1)Jesus – God Himself – has come to us in the flesh! Two,(2) we have overcome the spirit of the evil one that would lead us to deny Jesus is God by the power of the Holy Spirit given to us; and three, (3)the Holy Spirit that is in us is greater than the evil one that is in the world!

( I ) Let’s take this apart just a little, and then talk about some application. First, digging into a little Greek here, you can make a note in the margins of your Bibles next to verse two about Jesus coming in the flesh, that in the original language this is not a reference to a past event, but rather an ongoing continuance. In other words, it’s not that Jesus came in the flesh once as a past event, and isn’t in the flesh anymore, it means, “Jesus came in flesh and blood, remains flesh and blood, and will remain flesh and blood forever.”

Think about that for a moment! The creator of the universe, the designer and author of all there is became a man, forever. He has fingers and toes, teeth and tonsils, knee caps and elbows and hair on His arms. He became one of us without giving up His God-hood so He could save us, and then give us victory over the devil!

( II ) Let’s look at the second thing to rejoice about – we have overcome the spirit of the evil one by the power of the Holy Spirit. The way the Greek works with this wording is similar to the way it works with Jesus coming in flesh and blood. It’s not, Jesus overcame the evil one once for us and that’s that, but rather, ‘we have this victory and it is decisive, and it continues.’ And it’s ours! It’s ours because Jesus gives it to us, and it’s ours today, tomorrow and forever.

What Jesus tells us about those who have this victory?

“I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” – Rev. 2:7

They will never need to worry about going to hell. – Rev. 2:11

“ I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” – Rev. 2:17

“ I will give him authority over the nations.” – Rev. 2:26

“I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and His angels.” – Rev. 3:5

“I will make him a pillar in the temple of God.” – Rev. 3:12

“I will give him right to sit with Me on My throne.” – Rev. 3:21

“He who overcomes will inherit all this heaven, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” – Rev. 21:7

Victors! Overcomers! Winners! - those who live in the ongoing victory over the devil given to us by Jesus!

( III ) Finally, the third thing to rejoice about is also from verse 4 – the Holy Spirit who is in us is greater, more powerful, than the devil who is in the world. Does this mean we are never going to sin? No. What it means is even though we do sin, the power of forgiveness following repentance and confession is more powerful than the hold the devil would like to have on us. What it means is always there for us. – Power of the Blood of the Lamb!

1 .Metanoia – Repent

2. Arneomai – Renounce

3. ___ __ “qanah” – Reclaim

4. Pl_róo, (play-row) – Refill

5. _____ (chairo) – Rejoice

When life is hard, the Five R’s; our victory

When questions are more plentiful than answers, the Five R’s; our overcoming.

When joy is overtaking us and we’ve got the world on a string, the Five R’s; our strength. In times of happiness, in times of trial, in seasons of despair and in seasons of hope, the Five R’s; our steady rock instead of the shifting sand the devil offers.  -  Rejoice!

Would you pray with me please?

Heavenly Father, thank You for claiming us as Your own through our adoption into Your family. Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to us and delivering us from the power the enemy of our souls wants to have over us. Holy Spirit, thank You for filling us again and again, and giving us Your powerful indwelling in this world.

Help us to not forget that when we sin, there is grace for the repentant; power for the renouncer; hope for the reclaimer; joy for the refilled and delight in our Triune God for worshippers rejoicing for all You’ve done, still do, and will continue to do despite the best laid plans of the evil one.

Lord Jesus, keep us firmly held in Your nail scarred hands until the day You return to take Your overcomers to the place You’ve been preparing for us. To You and You alone be all glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever, Amen.

Christ's Victory Over Evil

Biblical theology and pastoral ministry               by Peter G. Bolt

The Lord Jesus Christ has already won the victory. This is the objective reality that needs to inform our thought about every aspect of human life in this world. Especially as we contemplate the abiding presence of demonic evil in our world (whether in the language of ‘evil’ that has re-emerged into our public discourse, or in the threat of evil we feel in our personal experience), there is another word that constantly whispers in our ears the greatest victory this world has ever seen and will ever see: ‘Christ is risen!’

It is not easy to hear that word. The presence of evil itself, or our fear of the demonic, can stifle the gospel whisper. From the beginning of the gospel mission this quiet word has seemed weak and powerless to a world confronted by evil powers, which raise both fear and fascination. And yet it is through this word (which speaks of the greatest victory of all time) that God works his mighty power to save.

The relationship between Christians and the forces of evil has been discussed from a variety of perspectives within the history of Christian thought, and recent influential mission studies and pastoral practices have proved to be a stimulus to further discussion. In the School of Theology provided a multi-disciplined approach to ‘Christ’s Victory over the powers’.

Tony Payne sets the scene for this exploration by outlining the history of the present fascination with demons found among contemporary ‘expansive charismatic’ circles. The very presence of the devil and demons in this world already presents people with enough clamour to distract from hearing the gospel word, but the rhetoric emanating from these circles has substantially increased .

Peter Bolt then turns to the Scriptures. What does God’s Word say about demons, and what does God’s Word refrain from saying? A truly biblical theology will not only uphold what is clearly taught in God’s Word, but will also be instructed by the Bible’s own restraint. We can know the truth about the demonic only from what the Bible says, but what happens if it does not seem to say enough?

And, more importantly, even when it does touch on the evil powers, how does this teaching serve the central message of the Scriptures, namely that Christ came to destroy the works of the devil by dealing decisively with our sin when he died on the cross?

요일 3:8 - 요일 3:8

(8)죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이니라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이니라 (8)He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.     I John 3:8

Much discussion about the demonic draws upon the material found in the first three Gospels, recounting Jesus’ encounters with the demonized. Bill Salier examines this interesting ‘absence’, and shows how John nevertheless has a strong interest in the defeat of the devil, and that this centres around the climactic events of Jesus’ life. Matthew Jensen takes this discussion further into the epistle of John, where this theme continues. Jesus’ glorification accomplished the victory over the devil’s works.

Jesus’ death accomplished the justification of the ungodly. Mark Thompson exposes this central truth of the gospel, and shows how the assurance of being justified also includes the assurance that Christ has already defeated the evil powers and removed the devil’s hold over Christ’s people.

Con Campbell continues this note of assurance by meditating upon the believer’s present position ‘in Christ’, where the victory of Christ is already experienced. Even if there is a present struggle in which we are engaged, this does not diminish the safe place in which we stand.

Many Westerners may give little thought to the evil powers, but other cultures live with a greater awareness of the presence of evil. Greg Anderson and Jonathan Lilley share the fruit of their research conducted among indigenous Australians. What comfort does the quiet word of Christ’s victory have, when the evil powers are much more a part of a person’s culture?

The victory of Christ has already been accomplished, but the world in which we live is still given over to the devil, and the evil powers still threaten human existence. Don West urges Christians to pray, especially in response to the promises attached to prayer. As we struggle to live for Christ in this world, Christ’s victory is there to be grasped – if only we would ask.

Christian ministry is gospel ministry: the quiet word of Jesus’ cross, the confession that Christ is risen, applied to real human beings in the context of a disordered, suffering world. In the final chapter Peter Bolt and Don West draw out some implications of Christ’s finished work in order to yield some principles of gospel ministry.

The evil powers are operative, but there is no need to increase the clamour about them, nor is there any reason to fear. This is still the world in which Jesus Christ rose from the dead. That is the whisper that still needs to be heard.

RESCUE THE PERISHING
Words: Fanny Crosby, 1869; Music: W. Howard Doane

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.

Refrain

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

2. Though they are slighting Him, still He is waiting,
Waiting the penitent child to receive;
Plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
He will forgive if they only believe.

Refrain

3. Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.

Refrain

4. Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.

Refrain
