Judgment of God and the Nations

(31)When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: (32)And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: (33)And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. (34)Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:                    Mt 31:34

What are the requirements for being granted entrance into Christ’s Millennial Kingdom?

The Judgment of the Nations

The feast of The Day of Atonement, which foreshadows the Time of Jacob’s Trouble and which represents The Great Tribulation, will end with the physical and visible return of Jesus (Theoncratic Christ) to this earth for Millennium. When he returns, he will defeat all of his enemies, and will then go on to judge the mortal survivors of The Great Tribulation.

We know from scripture the antichrist will set his image in the Holy Place and demand worship as God. From that point on he will openly and brutally persecute the people of God. His reign of terror will last for *forty-two months (1260 days) and will end with the physical, visible return of Jesus Christ at the battle of Armageddon.

The Man of Sin will be overthrown at the return of Jesus Christ 1260 days (42 months) after he breaks his treaty with Israel and demands worship for himself (Daniel 12.11-12, Revelation 13.5, Revelation 19.11-20).

1260 & 1290 & 13435 Days = 30days + 45days =75days

Daniel also mentions a time period of 1290 days, which is 42 months + an additional 30 days (Daniel 12.11) What will be going on until the 1290th day The time period is further extended by an additional 45 days—bringing us to a total of 75 days when Daniel says that blessed is he that waits and comes to the 1335th day (Daniel 12.11-12).

So we see something critical will be happening from the time the Man of Sin is removed from power on the 1260th day until the 1335th day. What will be going on for 75 days after Christ returns [Daniel 12.11-12])?

The Gathering

When Jesus returns to this earth as the undisputed King of kings and Lord of lords, and sits upon the throne of his glory, the Bible tells us that all nations (the mortal survivors of The Great Tribulation) will be gathered before him to be judged concerning whether or not they are worthy to be granted entrance into his earthly kingdom. This will take some time (Matthew 25.31-32[31-46]).

The Scriptures make it clear that Christ will be assisted in this judgment in various ways. The twelve apostles of the lamb will judge the 12 tribes of Israel, and others of the Children of the Resurrection will assist him in judging (then ruling over) the mortal survivors of The Great Tribulation. This may also be the time that part (or all) of the Scripture is fulfilled which says the saints will judge angels (Matthew 19.28, 1 Corinthians 6.2-3, Revelation 2.26-27, 5.10, 12.5). The Holy angels will also be present to assist in carrying out of sentences (Matthew 13.41-42, 49, Mark 13.27[26-27]).

The word “waits,” in Daniel 12.12, has an interesting connotation implying the period of the 75 days may still be difficult for those who have not yet submitted to the antichrist during his reign (most likely referring to Jews, because that is primarily who Daniel’s visions concern). There are no details given in scripture concerning this time period except those that relate directly to the Judgment of the Nations, so we have to accept by faith that the promise will indeed be relevant for those who will be living on earth when Christ returns, and that they will understand and draw enough strength from it to persevere just a few days longer.

At any rate, all preliminaries to the official beginning of the first 1000 thousand years of Christ’s reign will be completed within 75 days of his arrival. Tribulation survivors along with the resurrected and raptured saints will be rewarded by hearing the words, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world (Matthew 25.34).”

**Many passages in scripture refer to the Judgment of the Nations. The following are just a few examples The gathering of the nations for judgment Matthew 25.32-34, Isaiah 43.5-9, 56.8, 66.18     The administrators of Christ’s government

Matthew 19.28       Angelic involvement in the gathering and the judgment. Mark 13.27, Matthew 24.31,13.39, 41,49             The 75 days Daniel 12.11-12

Following are more Scriptures referring to the Judgment of the Nations - Matthew 13.37-43,49-50, 25.31-46, Ezekiel 20.37-38, Proverbs 29.16, Isaiah 2.4, 45.20-24, 60.12

Entrance into Christ’s Kingdom post Tribulation.

Kingdom Everyone surviving The Great Tribulation will pass under the rod of judgment after the battle of Armageddon. At this time the just and unjust alike will bow their knees to Christ and confess that he is LORD (YHWH—Yahweh—the Almighty) to the glory of God the Father (Romans 14.10-11, Isaiah 45.20-24,

Philippians 2.9-11, Revelation 1.8).

Just as those who took The Mark of the Beast not only professed allegiance to the Man of Sin but worshipped him as Almighty God as well, all who are still living at the visible return of Christ will be compelled to renounce all false gods/christs and acknowledge Jesus Christ as theocratic Christ, the Lord of lords, and the God of gods.

That confession however, will not necessarily grant the confessor entrance into his kingdom. All who swear allegiance to the Antichrist during The Great Tribulation by will be automatically doomed. There will be no second chances for anyone who takes his mark. They will be thrown into the lake of fire along with The Beast and his false prophet (Revelation 14.9-11, 19.20).

Upon what other criteria will the survivors of The Great Tribulation be judged?

Matthew 25.34-40 lists some of the requirements we find in scripture for being granted entrance into Christ’s earthly Millennial kingdom

1. Seeing Christ hungry and feeding him

2. Seeing him thirsty and giving him

something to drink
3. Taking him in even though he is a stranger
4. Seeing him naked and clothing him
5. Caring for him when he is sick and in prison

In this passage Jesus vividly describes the plight of tribulation saints—not just any time of tribulation but specifically The Great Tribulation. We know this because the context of the passage makes it clear that he is speaking to those who have been judged either worthy or unworthy to enter his earthly Kingdom.

Those who will be granted entrance To Christ’s Kingdom will fall into one of two categories. They will either be believers who have gone hungry,

What is the specific point of contention for which Yahweh is bringing the Nations into Judgment?

(2)I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

Joel 3:2

This is a very specific verse, as well as terrifying. The Nations will be judged because of their negative treatment of the Jews. There are two accounts, one dealing with the scattering of the Jews, the other dealing with the dividing up of the land of Israel.

Scattering of The Jews

The scattering refers to the harsh treatment of the Jews covering the last two thousand years when they were dispersed into Gentile Nations. That harsh treatment includes such sordid history as: blood libels, desecration of the host libels, expulsions, persecutions, pogroms, crusades, inquisitions, the Holocaust……… These crimes, and they are, fall under the general title of Anti-Semitism.

Dividing Up of the Land

This refers to the occupation of Israel by “Foreign Nations” over these centuries, but also to the “portioning of the land” in modern times. It is the refusal to accept “the God given right of the Jews” to live “Autonomously” in “Their own Land”. This can be termed as Anti-Zionism.

It is a twofold crime, Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism, for which the Nations will be held accountable for when they are brought into Judgment.

No wonder that Terrorist Groups, Eastern Religions and Ideas, Humanist Movements, Cult Groups and Sects, Secular Media and International Political Organizations are all unified under one Umbrella: The Denunciation and Destruction of Israel and The Jews.

(5)For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. (6)Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. (7)Peace be within thy walls, [and] prosperity within thy palaces.  Psalm 122:5-7

Will You Stand By Israel?

Dear Friends, whatever you do, do not forsake Israel in this hour when the need is great. No matter what the Media may peddle, do not let yourselves be deceived by this “bias” and “hatred” and “machinations” that are being hurled against Israel.

There is a “misrepresentation of facts”, a “purposeful and Satanic attack”, a “demonization” in an attempt to “discredit” Israel in the eyes of all throughout the entire World, but this opinion of the world, along with its desires, this is soon to pass away. It is Gods will and his word that will stand, and it alone.

(40)And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (41)Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Mt 25:40-41

Consequences

Simply put, any Nation that rises up and raises it’s heal against the Nation of Israel will come under severe judgment. Many may scoff, and many more will disagree completely with this statement, but a closer survey of the Bible, looking at the entire Bible again from a new perspective other than the one which may have been given to you by others, this will prove the case which is being presented to you here.

The Coming of Armageddon to Settle the Case between God and “the Nations”

All this controversy over the Jews’ right to live in the land of Israel, the land which was given to them by God himself……the tensions amount on the International Political scene as we speak. The tension and controversy over Israel will conclude with the spiritual warfare and signs and wonders as spoken of in the book of Joel Chapter 2. This tension will continue to mount until all the Nations are ready to come against the land of Israel and war with it…..

(9)Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: (10)Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

(11)Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. (12)Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

(13)Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. (14)Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

                                          Joel 3:9-14

This is the buildup for the greatest battle ever to be witnessed on the face of this Planet. The three themes of Spiritual Warfare, Restoration of Israel, and Judgment of the Nations are all still pending, and all very much close at hand……Here, the Nations will come and attack , all of them, and against Israel, in a World War of Apocalyptic dimensions, dimensions never seen before. This leads on to the battle of Armageddon (Har-Mageddon in Hebrew ). As the Armies of the Nations muster together, so do those of the Heavenly Spiritual realm above them…..

Haste ye, and come, all ye nations round about, and gather yourselves together: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Jehovah Joel 3:11

The Mighty Ones, this refers to the Army of Yahweh. It will be made up of his Angelic Host. This is also the time when the Angelic Host go forward to gather the elect from the four winds .

(30)And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (31)And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.             Mt 24:30-31

What are you prepared to do ?

And wouldn’t “Now” be the time to do it ? Will you stand for and beside Israel?

Friends, Israel doesn’t need your sympathy, Israel needs you, and there are a multitude of things you can undertake personally to make that stand now in defen se of these people. To be on the side of Gods people and to defend them now, as well as in one of the darkest hours ever to come over the face of this Planet, to do this, is also to be on the side of God and his appointed Christ….the decision rests with you.

(26)For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. (27)For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

(28)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (29)And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.      Gal 3:26-29

The Principle of God’s Judgment

(4)Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? (5) But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

(28)For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: (29)But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.                   Romans 2:28-29

God has a right to judge

We so easily on His mercy and abuse His grace that if He didn't give us frequent examples of His justice, we would be much worse. So God will take a life or severely judge someone periodically to illustrate what should happen to those of us who are accustomed to His mercy. If we didn't have examples of the consequence of sin, we would go on blissfully trading on His mercy.

i) 1 Corinthians 10:8, 11-12--Verse 8 refers to people who committed fornication. God took the life of 23,000 of them. Verses 11-12 say, "All these things happened unto them for examples, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. Wherefore, let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." God gives us those examples to show us what should happen and to build an attitude of thanksgiving in our hearts. Every day we should thank God for being so merciful to overlook our sins. We would never tolerate the insubordination that God tolerates.

ii) Luke 13:1-5--"There were present at that season some that told him - Jesus of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices." Apparently some Galilean Jews came to the Temple to offer their sacrifices. As they did, Pilate's men entered the Temple and slaughtered them so that their blood actually mingled with the blood of the their sacrifices. The people crowding around Jesus were not asking about Pilate's cruelty; they were questioning God's justice for allowing that to happen.

The text continues: "Jesus, answering, said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay. But, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (vv. 2-3). Jesus was saying that they weren't any worse than the people He was talking to. The key issue was repentance. Unless they repented, they would die also. The Galilean Jews were examples. They received justice as an illustration of what would happen to all who don't repent.

Jesus then gave another example of the same principle: "Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay. But, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (vv. 4-5).

History affirms God's goodness. Some He has appointed as examples to warn of sin's just consequence and make us grateful and repentant that we haven't received it.

2. The result

If you refuse to be led to repentance by God's goodness, and if you will not thank Him and come to Christ, then your hard and unconverted heart is piling up wrath. You may be avoiding God's judgment now, but in the day when the fullness of wrath is revealed at the Great White Throne, God's righteous judgment will break loose on you. Because God is merciful, people think their future is secure. Instead of being driven to repentance because God has been so kind to them as sinners, they are under the illusion that they have nothing to be concerned about. So people tread on His mercy only to one day experience the fullness of His wrath.

a) The state of the heart

The Greek word translated "hardness" (skl[ma]erot[ma]es) in Romans 2:5 gives us the English word sclerosis. It refers to the hardening of something, such as the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Hardening of the arteries may take you to the grave, but hardening of the heart will take you to hell.

Paul also referred to the heart that's "impenitent," which means "non-repentant," "unconverted," or "unchanged." Ezekiel said that the Israelites had a stony heart (Ezek. 3:7; 36:26). Jesus also referred to people with hard hearts (Matt. 19:8; Mark 3:5; 6:52; 8:17; John 12:40). The writer of Hebrews urged his audience three times not to harden their hearts (Heb. 3:8, 15; 47). Those who become cold and indifferent store up wrath for themselves.

b) The time of the judgment

I believe that the "day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God" (Rom. 2:5) refers to the Great White Throne. Revelation 20:11-15 tells us that the Lord will call together all the wicked dead. They will be "judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works" (v. 12) and will then be cast forever into the lake of fire with the devil and his angels.

Conclusion

You can tread on God's mercy now and receive fury in the future, or you can recognize His mercy for what it is, be grateful, and come to God with a repentant heart and turn to Christ. If God's goodness to you is not leading you to repentance, then every sin you commit is filling up a reservoir of God's patience that is held together by His mercy. Some day it will get too full. When the damn breaks you will be drowned in an eternal flood of your own sins. But you have an alternative. In the midst of that is an island of safety: the island Calvary, where the Savior waits for you come to Him.

Mt 25:44-46

INTRODUCTION

1. Included in "The Olivet Discourse" are two parables, followed by a

   judgment scene.

   a. The parables are directed toward Jesus' disciples

      1) The first to encourage them to be watchful - Mt 25:1-13

      2) The second to admonish them to be fruitful - Mt 25:14-30

   b. The judgment scene depicts the nations brought before Jesus

      - Mt 25:31-46

      1) Note that it is the "nations" being judged, not disciples

      2) The nations are judged based upon their treatment of Jesus'

         Disciples/& Israel

         a) Those that showed mercy and kindness to His disciples are

            blessed

         b) Those that did not are condemned

2. Questions abound regarding "The Judgment Of The Nations"...

   a. Who are the "nations" in this passage?  All of mankind, or only

      the non-elect?

   b. Is this "judgment" scene depicting the Day of Judgment, or might

it refer to a judgment that foreshadowed the Final Judgment?

   c. As part of "The Olivet Discourse", could Jesus still be talking

about events related to the destruction of Jerusalem?

[However one may answer such questions, there are important lessons to

be gleaned from these words of Jesus.  But let's first consider how it

would be that Jesus is still referring to events related to the

destruction of Jerusalem described in Mt 24...]

I. THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS THEME

   A. AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF JOEL...

      1. The coming day of the Lord is depicted

         a. Following the outpouring of God's Spirit - Joel 2:28-29

         b. A great and terrible day is coming - Joel 2:30-31

         c. Yet salvation is available to those who accept it - Joel

            2:32; cf. Ac 2:16-21

      2. A "judgment of the nations" is then described

         a. The nations gathered in the Valley of Jehoshaphat - Joel

            3:1-2a,12-16

         b. The nations judged on the basis of their treatment of God's

            people - Joel 3:2b-8

   B. AS FOUND IN THE OLIVET DISCOURSE...

      1. Jesus foretold the coming day of the Lord - Mt 24:1-51

         a. Coming in destruction upon Jerusalem

         b. With warnings to escape when they see Jerusalem surrounded

            by armies

      2. A judgment of the nations is then described - Mt 25:31-46

         a. The nations gathered before Son of Man

         b. The nations judged on the basis of their treatment of God's

people ("inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of

            these My brethren")

   C. THIS IS A COMMON THEME IN THE SCRIPTURES...

      1. God describes judgment to come, using other nations as

         instruments of His wrath

      2. But He also holds the nations accountable for how His people

         are treated; for example...

         a. Assyria, the rod of God's anger - Isa 10:5-7,12-14,24-26

         b. Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon - Amos 1:3,6,9,11,13

      3. Nations that went too far (e.g., abusing the innocent) were

         held accountable

   D. JESUS MAY BE USING THE SAME THEME...

      1. Describing a judgment upon the nations...

         a. Employing figures reminiscent of the Judgment at the Last

            Day; for example...

            1) The Son of Man coming in glory, sitting on His throne

            2) The nations divided like sheep and goats

            3) Judgment rendered, followed by reward or punishment

         b. For such judgments foreshadowed and typified the Final

            Judgment

      2. Describing a judgment of the nations...

         a. Which followed the Lord's judgment upon Jerusalem - Mt 24

         b. Regarding their treatment of His brethren (the disciples of

            Jesus)

         c. Nations who treated them kindly would be blessed, otherwise

            they would be condemned

-- In the Book of Revelation, we see how Jesus dealt with the

Roman empire, used as the instrument of wrath in destroying

Jerusalem, and then the object of wrath in its own judgment

[This would be what Jesus is doing at this point in "The Olivet

Discourse".  It would certainly serve to comfort His disciples, knowing

that nations which failed to show mercy to them would not go

unpunished.  Even if this is point of the text, we can still glean

important...]

II. LESSONS FROM THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS

   A. THERE WILL BE A DAY OF JUDGMENT...

      1. Just as the Lord has judged nations throughout history

      2. So He will judge the world at the end of time, at the Last Day

         a. Jesus often spoke of the Judgment - e.g., Mt 12:36-37,

            41-42; Jn 12:47-48

         b. Paul also - e.g., Ac 17:30-31; 24:25; Ro 2:3-6; 14:10;

            2Co 5:10; 2Ti 4:1

         c. Others as well - e.g., He 9:27; 1Pe 4:5; 2Pe 2:9; 3:7;

            1Jn 4:17; Jude 6

-- Are we preparing for the Day of Judgment?

   B. ONE ISSUE WILL BE HOW WE TREATED JESUS' BRETHREN...

      1. Of course, every deed, word, and thought will be judged (see

         above verses)

      2. But our text reminds us how Jesus takes the treatment of His

         brethren - Mt 25:40,45

         a. "as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren,

            you did it to Me"

         b. "as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did

            not do it to Me"

      3. Jesus made the same point to Saul on the road to Damascus

         - Ac 9:1-5

         a. "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

         b. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting."

-- By persecuting the church, Saul was guilty of persecuting

            Christ!

      4. Jesus is the head, and His disciples (the church) is His body

         - Ep 1:22-23

         a. What we do or not do for His disciples, we do or not do for

            Christ!

         b. How is our treatment of our brethren?  Are we guilty of:

            1) Abusing them?

            2) Ignoring them?

            3) Failing to love them?

-- What is our relationship with other Christians, especially in

the context of the local church?

   C. THERE ARE PLACES PREPARED FOR AFTER THE JUDGMENT...

      1. One is for prepared people - Mt 25:34

         a. Described as "the kingdom prepared for you from the

            foundation of the world" - cf. 2Ti 4:18; 2Pe 1:11

to Millennial Kingdom to reign with JESUS the King.

         b. Described as "new heavens and a new earth in which

            righteousness dwells" - cf. 2Pe 3:13; Re 21:1

         c. Described as "the holy city, New Jerusalem" - cf. He 13:14;

            Re 3:12; 21:2-7

-- This place is for those whose names are in the Lamb's book

            of Life - Re 20:11-15

      2. One is for unprepared people - Mt 25:41

         a. Described as "the everlasting fire prepared for the devil

and his angels" - cf. Re 20:10

         b. Described as "the like of fire and brimstone" - Re 20:10,

            14; 21:8

         c. Described as "the second death" - Re 20:14; 21:8

-- This place is for those whose names are not in the book of

            life - Re 20:15

      3. Both places are prepared to last for eternity - Mt 25:46

         a. The one offering everlasting punishment

         b. The other offering eternal life

CONCLUSION

1. God's judgment upon nations in the past were written for our

   admonition - 1Co 10:11

   a. Such judgments reveal that God is a Righteous Judge

   b. Such judgments portend the Judgment to come at the Last Day

2. Whether or not Jesus uses the setting of the Final Judgment to

describe judgment upon the nations following the destruction of

Jerusalem, His words should cause us to consider...

   a. Are we preparing for the Day of Judgment?

   b. Involved in that preparation, is our relationship with our

brethren what it ought to be?

   c. What will Jesus say to us on that Day?

May we all walk in the grace and mercy of the Lord with an obedient

faith and love, so that we may hear Him say:

[마 25:34-마 25:34]

(34)그 때에 임금이 그 오른편에 있는 자들에게 이르시되 내 아버지께 복 받을 자들이여 나아와 창세로부터 너희를 위하여 예비된 나라를 상속하라

(34)Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

The Judgment of The Nations –in Depth

In the broad program of divine dealings with the Gentiles, the sovereignty of God over creation is revealed in an unusual way. Although God in His sovereign grace has allowed Gentiles to assume great power and in the words of Christ, “Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled” (Luke 21:24), the consummation of this program inevitably brings the Gentiles before God for much-deserved divine judgment.  - John F. Walvoord

The history of the world has demonstrated that mankind is not judged once but many times. God has already exercised His judgment upon angels, Adam and Eve, and many particular judgments have fallen upon individuals, cities, and nations. In the flood of Noah the entire world was subject to disciplinary judgment. Towering above all judgments in history is the fact that Christ on the cross was judged as the sin bearer for mankind and that there Satan also was judged and defeated (John 16:11). Christians in this present age of grace also experience the disciplinary judgment of God (I Corinthians 11:32). Throughout the whole period of the tribulation and especially in the great tribulation judgment after judgment is poured out upon the world.

(31)For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (32)But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.                          I Cor 11:31-32

In this sequence the judgment of the nations assumes great significance and is one of the important milestones in divine dealing with a wicked world. That it is not the final judgment is evident, for other judgments will follow at the end of the millennium and the final judgment of all will be at the Great White Throne.

The judgment of the nations, however, is important as bringing to a close one of the major phases of divine dealings, namely, the times of the Gentiles, and in a preliminary way anticipates the judgment of all unsaved men which will occur a thousand years later. The confusion which has arisen in the attempt to make this the judgment of all men, including both the resurrected and translated saints as well as the wicked, is corrected by careful attention to the exact text of Matthew 25:31-46 where the details of the judgment are given.

The Time Of The Judgment of Nations.
The passage is introduced by a time clause indicating when the judgment will take place in the tremendous sequence of events related to the second coming: “When the Son of man shall come in his glory” (Matthew 25:31). The context indicates that this is the coming of Christ to the earth in connection with the establishment of His earthly kingdom. The judgment, therefore, is distinguished in time from judgments that relate to the BEMA judgment seat of Christ occurring in connection with the rapture of the church, and from all historic judgments that precede as well as the many judgments that are poured upon the earth during the great tribulation.

It follows the second coming of Christ to the earth, and precedes and is a preparation for His reign on earth for a thousand years. Therefore it is also distinguished from any judgments on rebellion during His kingdom reign and from the final judgment of the Great White Throne at the end of the millennium.

The Place Of The Judgment
From the context it is also clear that the place of the judgment is earth, not heaven. The phrase, “the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him,” is a picture of Christ and the angels coming from heaven to the earth. This is substantiated by another time clause, “Then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory” (Matthew 25:31). This is not the throne of God in heaven, but rather the earthly throne predicted by the prophets. It is the beginning of the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth” (Jeremiah 23:5). The place of this judgment, therefore, is the millennial earth not heaven.

The Subjects Of The Judgment
In Matthew 25:32 the subjects of this divine judgment are clearly declared to be “all nations.” The passage could be translated “all Gentiles” as the Greek word is ethne. This is a common word found frequently in the Bible and generally used of non-Jewish races. Although occasionally used of the Jews themselves (cp. Luke 7:5; 23:2; John 11:48, 50, 51, 52; 18:35; Acts 10:22; etc.), the more common meaning is to refer to Gentiles as distinguished from Jews, for instance in the references in Romans 11:13; 15:27; 16:4; Galatians 2:12. In some passages the Gentile character of the word is the main thought as in Romans 3:29; 9:24.

The context here indicates that the nations or the Gentiles should be viewed as the non-Jewish population of the world. In the narrative they are contrasted to “my brethren” (Matthew 25:40) who in the passage are distinguished from both the sheep and the goats, which comprise the entire mass of the Gentiles. In order to maintain the distinctions, it is best to understand it as referring to the non-Jewish peoples of the world.

(38)And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

(39)As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.     Ezk 20:38-39

However, a similar judgment awaits the Jewish people (Ezekiel 20:34-38) and the issue is not whether both Jews and Gentiles are judged, but rather whether this passage concerns itself primarily with the Gentiles. In view of the fact that this is the climax of the times of the Gentiles, it seems appropriate that a special judgment should be applied to these who have oppressed Israel throughout their history.

From the English word nations some have inferred that what is dealt with here are political entities or countries as such. This is not at all indicated by the word ethne, a racial rather than an organizational term, and the details of the prophecy are such that they can be applied only to individuals and not to groups. The expression “all nations” therefore is best understood as referring to all Gentiles and more specifically all Gentiles who are living on earth at this time.

It should be understood that many Gentiles at the time of the second coming of Christ were also already judged in the very act of divine wrath being poured on the armies gathered in the Middle East according to Revelation 19:17-21. As this is an earlier event in connection with the second advent, it must be assumed that we have here living Gentiles who were non-combatants or not involved in this great struggle.

The Basis Of The Judgment
This passage in Matthew 25 is a remarkable one in that works are prominent. According to the Scriptures, as all Gentiles are gathered before Christ to be judged they are divided into two classes, one described as “sheep” and the other designated “goats.” According to Matthew 25:33, “he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.”

Having made this arbitrary division, He then justifies what He is doing by addressing Himself first to the sheep. In graphic language Christ in His role as “the King” declares to the sheep on his right hand: “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me” (Matthew 25:34-36).

The declaration by Christ is remarkable because attention is called to certain rather ordinary works such as feeding the hungry, giving the thirsty drink, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and those in prison. Furthermore, Christ declares that they who have done these things have done them to Him personally.

The righteous accordingly answer Him with the question, “Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?” (Matthew 25:37-39).

In reply Christ as “the King” states, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40).

In contrast to this, Christ then turns to those on the left hand described as goats and declares, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not” (Matthew 25:41-43).

In like manner the goats replied asking when they had neglected these works of mercy. The judgment then is pronounced upon the goats by Christ, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25:45, 46).

This passage has troubled expositors for it seems to indicate that the sheep go into life eternal because of their righteous works whereas the wicked are condemned because of their failure to do these prescribed deeds of kindness. The question is naturally raised whether a person can be saved by works. If any passage in the Bible seems to imply it, this would be the passage.

When other Scriptures are brought to bear upon the question of whether people can be saved by works, it soon becomes evident that salvation by works is an impossibility under any circumstances. Although grace may be revealed in different degrees in different dispensations, it is evident from the very doctrine that all men are sinners, that all men are spiritually dead, and that no amount of good works can reverse the sentence of death or change the sinful nature of man.

Works can never be the ground of man’s salvation. There can be no cure for depravity, Adamic sin, and obvious human failure found in every life, other than the grace of God. Hence, while there may be different dispensations with varying rules of life there can be only one way of salvation, namely, through Christ and His provided redemption. The question remains then how this passage in its plain emphasis on works can be justified.

(14)What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? (15)If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, (16)And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? (17)Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.                                  James 2:14-17

(27)Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.                                                   James 1:27

The answer is first of all found in the fact that in every dispensation works are not the ground of salvation, but rather they are the evidence of salvation. It is always true that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). This does not mean that a man is saved by works, but it does mean that one who really trusts God and is the recipient of divine grace will manifest this fact in a changed life. Humanly speaking, it is proper to challenge faith that does not manifest itself in some way. The passage then should be added to all others that emphasize the importance of works, not as the basis for salvation, but as the evidence of it.

(16)Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (17)But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

(18)My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.                                              I John 3:16-18

A question still remains, however, concerning the precise character of these works. Is it always true that those who are kind to others and feed them and clothe them are necessarily Christians? The obvious philanthropy of many non-Christians in our modern world would seem to indicate that this cannot be taken normally as an indisputable evidence of eternal life.

The answer to the problem is found in the peculiar circumstances which form the background of the judgment. The people who are here being judged as Gentiles are those who have survived the horrors of the great tribulation. In this period which Jeremiah refers to as “the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7), anti-semitism will reach an all-time high.

It is evident from the warning of Christ in Matthew 24:15-22 that the Jewish people will be hounded to the death especially in the Holy Land, and possibly throughout the world. Satanic hatred will be manifested to a degree never before achieved and will be part of the world-wide satanic deception which will cause men to believe a lie. In the words of II Thessalonians 2:11, “God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”

Under these peculiar circumstances, under the strain and stress of satanic hatred of God and compulsion to worship the world ruler, anyone who would befriend a Jew would be a marked man. It is almost inconceivable that one who would be a true worshiper of the beast would ignore the world-wide command to exterminate the Jew. For a Gentile under these circumstances to befriend one who is designated as “my brethren” would be phenomenal and could be motivated only by a realization that the Jewish people are indeed the people of God and that their Messiah is indeed the Saviour of all who believe in Him.

A simple work of kindness such as is here described therefore becomes highly significant, and in the context of this judgment one who would perform deeds of kindness would inevitably be a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hence, while the works are not the ground of their salvation, which inevitably must be the grace of God and the sacrifice of Christ, works are nevertheless the evidence of salvation and to this our Lord points.

It is still true that salvation is “not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:9) but rather by faith and by grace. – Salvation by Grace; but Rewards by good righteous deeds –white linen of the Bride.

The importance of works in the final judgments of mankind here has another divine revelation. The sheep who have manifested their faith in Christ under trying circumstances by befriending a Jew are now rewarded by being ushered into the millennial kingdom with its blessings of Christ’s righteous rule and beneficent care over all who trust in Him. By contrast, the goats who followed the course of this world and undoubtedly participated in the persecution of the Jewish people as well as neglecting their acts of kindness now come under the divine judgment which they justly deserve, and are cast into everlasting fire.

(16)Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  (17)Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (18)For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

(19)Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (20)For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.            Mt 5:16-20

The Judgment
The purpose of the judgment of the Gentiles is obviously one of separation of the righteous from the unrighteous in preparation for the millennial kingdom (cp. Matthew 24:40, 41). It is a fulfillment of that which was anticipated in the parables of Matthew 13 where it was predicted that in the end the wheat and the tares would be separated, the good and the bad fish would be dealt with, and the bad fish destroyed. The millennial kingdom will begin with the entire adult population of the world limited to those who have put their trust in Christ. It will be a new beginning comparable to that following the flood when Noah and his immediate family formed the entire population of the earth.

From this context it is also evident that this is not a final judgment of the individuals concerned. Those ushered into the millennial kingdom in this judgment still are in their natural bodies, still have a natural life to live, and ultimately will either die or be translated and have their life reviewed in finality. Although there is no specific revelation of this fact, the general truth of Hebrews 9:27, “as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment,” it may be concluded that the sheep will be subject to ultimate reward for their works even though at this time they are assured of eternal salvation in that they possess eternal life.

In a similar way the casting of the wicked into everlasting fire should not be confused as a final judgment in which they are cast into the lake of fire which does not occur for another thousand years. It is rather that they move into a state of divine judgment described by the word “everlasting fire” such as is true both in Hades, the temporary abode of the wicked dead, and the lake of fire, the final state of the wicked. Their judgment in a wor
