Pearl in the Bible -성서의 진주의 비밀-II

역본: NASB

(민 11:7) Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium.

(잠 8:11) "For wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things can not compare with her.

(잠 20:15) There is gold, and an abundance of jewels; But the lips of knowledge are a more precious thing.

(잠 31:10) An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.

(마 7:6) "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

The History of Pearls and Weddings
Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. In the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu book dating back to 1000 B.C. Krishna, the preserver, brought forth pearls from the depths of the sea to give to his daughter on her wedding day. Thus started the tradition of giving pearls to the bride.

The ancient Greeks also believed that pearls should be part of the wedding experience. They considered pearls to be the "wedding gem" because they believed that pearls would help ensure marital bliss and prevent newlywed brides from crying.

During the Crusades, gallant knights returning from the Holly Lands would bestow pearls to their "fair ladies" for their wedding days. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, pearls were at the height of wedding fashion with royal weddings in the French House of Burgundy taking place in a "sea of pearls". Everyone from the bride to her male guests were adorned in glowing pearls.

From Queen Elizabeth I to our modern Queen Elizabeth II, the tradition of wearing pearls on the wedding day has continued. At the beginning of the 20th century, pearls were as much a nuptial(wedding) gem in the United States as diamonds are today.

Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too.

"The Pearl of Great Price"
Mark Correll, Pastor - Cathedral of the Cross
"…the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it." Matthew 13:45-46

Here the Bride of Christ, the church, is called the Pearl of Great Price. A pearl so precious, so comely that the Merchant Man, Jesus, seeking goodly pearls was willing to sell all that He had to buy just that one pearl. In just two verses, Matthew encapsulates the emotions of our Savior and our God towards His church. Jesus, the true Merchant Man, did just what this parable talks about. He gave all He could possibly give on Calvary (the bargaining table) to purchase His bride, His precious pearl.

Before looking at further similarities, let's narrow down the meaning of the Bride of Christ to those who are saved…purchased by Christ. If saved, we are both individually and collectively His Bride-you and I are a "pearl of great price."
As a child of God, I find this parallel between pearls and the body of Christ interesting because a pearl has such a questionable beginning, one which could well be described as far from beautiful. As it is with the pearl, so it is with the bride of Christ-as it is with the bride of Christ, so it is with the pearl.
What then do you and a pearl have in common that unifies and justifies so great an analogy? Well, it all starts like this:

A grain of sand, a piece of foreign matter, or at times, even an intruding parasite somehow works its way inside of an oyster and lodges in the folds of its flesh. I can almost see the tiny invader in the calm sea; microscopic, unseen, unheard, unfelt on the surface finds a sliver of an opening in the otherwise hard hinged shell that protects its host.

How like us. We appear so tough on the outside, so impenetrable, so together. After all, we're adults now, not kids. We don't cry anymore. We've been hurt enough times that we've learned well how to protect ourselves. Our outside smiles are pulled tight, concealing the way into our hearts. The oyster's white outside shell has concentric rings that show years of "handling situations" and of weathering storms. Like the oyster, our shells have served our soft inside well-have they not?

Tiny Invader injures &hurts -
Then it happens-a tiny grain of sand slips through. Our shell, unknown to us, has been breached. Once inside, we feel it like we feel the throws of a thousand darts. We toss and turn because of the pain. We struggle with the hurtful emotion. We wonder why we can't "ride it out." We ache deep inside. We hurt like we've never hurt before. To make matters worse, no one else understands what we're going through. To them, it's just a small grain of sand-but to us; it's an emotional sand barge blocking our forward motion and sense of wellness.

Like the invaded oyster we must cast out this unwanted guest, we must try to expel this unwanted hurt, this deep disappointment, this emotional feeling that feels like hell on earth. We try, but almost always, like the oyster, to no avail.
Exasperated and annoyed by constant failure, the frustrated ocean mollusk will finally abort its first plan and choose an inevitable alternate route. We can almost title this other direction as "THE NEXT BEST THING."

Oyster secretes Nacre coating the irritating intruder -
Realizing the pain isn't going to leave, the oyster will secrete, over and over again, a milky calcium-like substance called nacre that will thoroughly coat the irritating intruder-smoothing over the rough edges of the sand-grain, or killing the leech-like organism.

As far as the oyster is concerned-this inborn survival technique is only utilized to take care of the present need and make life more bearable and comfortable. Yet, apart from its knowledge or plan, something quite rare, precious and beautiful is being formed-one tedious step at a time.

Glory is gradually being born out of adversity.
Beauty is emerging from difficulty. Something of quality, of excellent value, is slowly yet steadily being created out of that which appeared to have no value. In other words, (speaking on both levels now) the glory of the oyster's future inheritance far outweighs the temporary and comparatively minor hardship that it may have to endure along the way…AND SO IT IS WITH US!

(14)Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. (15)For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

(16)For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. (17)For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; (18)While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.                         II Cor 4:14-18

Paul said it this way, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." 2 Corinthians 4:17

As I've heard my father-in-law many times say-"its not the mountain up ahead that bothers us, but rather the pebble in our shoe." Whether big or small, that grain, that affliction, that hurt, that loss, seems like the end of your world. Take hope! To the Lord, you are of great price! You may even be a "Pearl" in the making…A Pearl of Great Price! May God continue to bless you as He coats you with His Son's blood!  -   Amen.

1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Peter is talking to married women here,
the Bride, Pearl, hidden Treasure is (or will be) a married woman

1Pe 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 1Pe 3:2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 1Pe 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

1Pe 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 1Pe 3:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

the Bride, Pearl, Treasure calls Jesus........ LORD!

THE PEARL OF GREAT VALUE
Scripture Portion: Matthew 13:45-46

by Francis Dixon.

The seven parables of Matthew 13 are designed to show the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, i.e. the secrets of heaven’s rule over the earth while the King Himself is rejected. Read Matthew 13:45-46. Who is the “merchant”, and what is the “pearl of great value”, for which he sold “everything he had”?

1. The popular interpretation is as follows:

The Pearl of great value is the Lord Jesus Christ and His salvation.
The Man who sells all his possessions to obtain the Pearl of great value is the sinner seeking and finding salvation.
But beautiful as this interpretation is, surely it is not the correct one, because it is contrary to the whole plan of redemption:-

To suggest that the Merchant represents the sinner is to suggest that the sinner seeks salvation. This is not the teaching of scripture. It is always the Lord who takes the initiative and who seeks men (Genesis 3:9; Luke 19:10), and compare John 6:44.
To say that the Pearl of great value is Christ and the salvation that is in Him, is to suggest that salvation is something that can be purchased. But we do not gain salvation by anything that we can pay, or offer, or do (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5).
It is true, of course, that Christ is a Pearl of very great value, but this is not the teaching of the parable.

2. What is the true interpretation of this parable?

The “Merchant” is Christ.
The “Peal of great value” is the Church, the Bride of Christ.
The price paid for the Pearl was His own life. Look up Acts 20:28; 2 Corinthians 8:9; Ephesians 1:14; 5:25; 1 Peter 1:18-19.

3. Notice how beautifully the Pearl represents the Church which Christ loved, and for which He gave Himself.

The Pearl represents the Church in its character. The pearl is a unique gem, in that jewels such as the diamond, emerald, topaz, are all inorganic compounds – that is, no life is involved in their formation. But in the case of the pearl, life is involved. It is composed simply of carbonate of lime, and in its chemical analysis it is exactly like that of common chalk. The remarkable thing is that every now and then some life principle within the chalk stimulates the chalk and produces a pearl.
Now all this is very suggestive. The Pearl is like the Church in that it is a living organism. It is not a dead thing like a diamond or an emerald; the Church is not a lifeless organization constructed by men, but a living organism, and every member of it shares the true life of the Church, composed of born-again men and women – those who have received new life through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and through their union with Him (John 15:5; 1 John 5:11-12).

The Pearl represents the Church in the great cost of its purchase. How is the pearl formed? Scientists say that it is the result of suffering on the part of the little creature inside the oyster or clam. An irritation is set up inside the shell which is caused by the admission of a tiny grain of sand. This makes the oyster bleed, and the life-supporting fluid is drawn out. Thus the creature literally gives its life for the formation of the pearl. What a wonderful picture it is of the way the Church is formed – so perfectly described in Isaiah 53 verses 5 and 10. At Calvary the Lord Jesus shed His blood to purchase the Pearl of great value. His Church, and the grain of sand that caused His suffering, was nothing less than our sin. Look up Isaiah 53:6; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24.

The Pearl represents the Church in the process of its polishing. When the pearl is first discovered it appears to be of very little value, but when it is polished an amazing transformation takes place! It is only after it passes through the skilful hands of a polisher that it reaches its full value. Here is the explanation of the suffering, the trials, and the testings that God’s people have to endure. They are all part of the Lord’s loving polishing process! Look up Ephesians 5:25-27, and compare Hebrews 12:11. It is a wonderful thing to be polished by Him, held in His safe hands!

(9)Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  (10)For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.       Heb 12:9-10

The Pearl represents the Church in the message it carries. Today a pearl is used simply as a piece of jewelry, but in ancient days it was used as an emblem of healing, comfort and joy. In fact it was looked upon as a kind of charm to drive away sorrow and gloom. We do not believe in lucky charms, but we do believe that the Church, our Lord’s Pearl of great value, has a healing ministry in the world. There are plenty of people who despise the Church, forgetting that it is largely due to the presence of the Church in the world that we have hospitals, homes for the elderly, and ten thousand other helpful and comforting agencies. Have you thought what our land would be like without the Church, and its ministry and its message?

The Pearl represents the Church in its value to its owner. A pearl is worn to enhance the beauty of its wearer. It is impossible to explain it, or even to understand it – but through all eternity the Church will magnify the Lord Jesus Christ and will be to Him a jewel of matchless glory and splendour!

Very soon now He will come and take the Church to Himself (John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17), and ultimately He will display her to a wondering hew heaven. (Ephesians 2:7)! Read Revelation 21:9-27.

(6)And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (7)That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.   Eph 2:6-7

Pearl –the Bride of Christ

Gates of New Jerusalem
The gates

New Jerusalem has 12 gates that lead into the city(Rev. 21:12). They are most likely equidistant apart. There are 3 gates on the north, 3 on the east, 3 on the west and 3 on the south(Rev. 21:13). Though each gate has an angel guarding it(Rev. 21:12), they will never bet shut(Rev. 21:25). The city will never be under attack as all enemies of the Kingdom will be far away from it(Rev. 20:11-15).

Names of gates - The gates are named after the 12 tribes of Israel(Rev. 21:12). The book of Revelation doesn't specify which gates have which names. However the book of Ezekiel likely provides the answer as the city it describes also has 12 gates named after the tribes of Israel. Ezekiel is likely describing Jerusalem in the Millennium reign of Christ, and this could very well mirror New Jerusalem on a smaller scale.

The north side's gates are Reuben, Judah and Levi(Eze. 48:31). The gates on the east side are Joseph, Benjamin and Dan(Eze. 48:32). The south side's gates are Simeon, Issachar and Zebulun(Eze. 48:33). The gates on the west side are Gad, Asher and Naphtali(Eze. 48:34).

Here's an illustration of where the gates are:

Significance of Pearls

Each gate is of a single pearl(Rev. 21:21), where the phrase "pearly gates" comes from. These are certainly no ordinary pearls as they are very large. The Bible doesn't say how large though they must be at least 8 feet in height so even the tallest people can enter in their resurrected bodies.

Pearls are hard but also shiny and beautiful. One unique aspect about them is their iridescence. This means their surface color changes based on the angle light is hitting them. The same effect is seen in soap bubbles. Pearls are so pretty they are used in necklaces and elaborate decorations. With this description, we can have a vivid idea of the beauty of New Jerusalem’s gates.

The fact they are pearls could be symbolic of the suffering Christ endured so people can live in New Jerusalem. Jesus compared the kingdom of Heaven to a pearl in a field that a merchant sells everything he has to get(Matt. 13:45-46).

Closing thoughts.

Admission into the city is free. There will be no ID check at the gates to get in. Only those whose names are in the Lamb's Book of Life will enter(Rev. 21:27).

(26)And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. (27)And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.              Rev 21:26-27.

Study #15 -- Where is New Jerusalem Located?

Chapter 21 of Revelation reveals events that will take place in the future...

In the future, New Jerusalem will descend from Heaven, to rest on the New Earth.

Since the prophecies in Revelation 21 are not as yet fulfilled, the present location of New Jerusalem is in God's Heaven. Its future location is on the New Earth.

TAKE NOTICE - At present, New Jerusalem (Paradise) is a place within God's Heaven. Thus, New Jerusalem is NOT ALL of God's Heaven.

**   Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.  Rev 21.2b

Study #16 -- Shape & Size of New Jerusalem

Its length and breadth are equal.   And the city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as its breadth. Rev 21.16a

Fur·long (fûr lông) n. Abbr. fur. A unit for measuring distance, equal to one-eighth mile (201 meters). American Heritage Dictionary

Study #17 -- The Wall Around New Jerusalem

The outer boundaries of the garden city are established by a large wall that completely surrounds it.

The wall measures 144 cubits. Then he (an angel) measured its (New Jerusalem's) wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits Rev 21.17a   One cubit is approximately one foot and a half. Therefore, the thickness of the wall approximates 216 feet.

** CUBIT - Strong's Number: 4083 (pechus)

Denotes the forearm, i.e., the part between the hand and the elbowjoint; hence, "a measure of length," not from the wrist to the elbow, but from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow joint, i.e., about a foot and a half, or a little less than two feet, Matt. 6:27; Luke 12:25; John 21:8; Rev. 21:17. Vine's New Testament Dictionary

Translucent Jasper - New Jerusalem's wall is constructed of jasper. Jasper is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz that may be red, yellow, or brown.

And the construction of its wall was of jasper Rev 21.18a  New Jerusalem's wall is a thick, translucent sheet of jasper. That is, the garden city's wall transmits light.

**   JASPER - Strong's Number: 2393 (iaspis)

A Phoenician word (cf. Heb. yash'pheh, e.g., Exod. 28:20; 39:16), seems to have denoted a translucent stone of various colors, especially that of fire, Rev. 4:3; 21:11, 18, 19. The sardius and the jasper, of similar color, were the first and last stones on the breastplate of the high priest, Ex. 28:17, 20. Vine's New Testament Dictionary

12 Foundation Pillars (Stele) - New Jerusalem's wall has 12 foundations.

The names of the 12 apostles of Jesus are inscribed on the foundations.

The foundations are adorned with precious stones.  ** Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev 21.14

And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones Rev 21.19a  the wall's foundations are 12 supporting pillars (stele), one at each corner of the wall, and two on each side of the wall. …………..Note 3   STELE - an upright stone slab or pillar engraved with an inscription or design and used as a monument. New World Dictionary

The Gates of New Jerusalem - The wall of the garden city has 12 gates, three on each side. There are 12 angels who attend the gates.

The names of the 12 tribes of Israel are inscribed on the gates.

Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. Rev 21.12-13

Each of the 12 gates is constructed of one pearl.     Note 4   And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. Rev 21.21a

NOTE 1 -- The Shape of New Jerusalem

New Jerusalem is a cube, because Revelation 21.16 says, "Its length, breadth, and height are equal."   And the city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. Rev 21.16

The Bible says New Jerusalem is laid out as a square. It does not say it is laid out as a cube.   And the city is laid out as a square (tetragonos), and its length is as great as its breadth. Rev 21.16a

In Revelation 21.16, "square" translates the Greek word tetragonos. Tetragonos means four cornered. A square is 4-cornered.     tetragonos ^5068^, "four-cornered" (from tetra, and gonia, "a corner, or angle"), is found in <Rev. 21:16> (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words) (Copyright (C) 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

Strong's Exhaustive Concordance 5068 - tetragonos

four-cornered, i.e. square:

KJV--foursquare. A cube would be a building.  New Jerusalem is Paradise -- a garden (Gk paradeisos),    Strong's Exhaustive Concordance 3857 - paradeisos

a park, i.e. (specifically) an Eden (place of future happiness, "paradise"):

KJV--paradise. New Jerusalem is surrounded by a wall. A cube-shaped New Jerusalem would be a huge building.  Also she (New Jerusalem) had a great and high wall with twelve gates Rev 21.12a          A river flows in New Jerusalem. Orchards of fruit trees are there. These are attributes of a garden.

And he (an angel) showed me (the apostle John) a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. Rev 21.1-2a The fact that New Jerusalem's height is the same as its length and breadth does shape  a cube-shaped building.

Mount Zion is located at the heavenly New Jerusalem. The height of the Mount defines the height of the city.       Its (New Jerusalem's) length, breadth, and height are equal. Rev 21.16b  But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem Heb 12.22a

And the city (New Jerusalem) is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as its breadth. And he (an angel) measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. Rev 21.16

Note 3 -- The Foundations of the Walls of New Jerusalem

Notice that it is New Jerusalem's wall that has foundations, NOT the garden city itself. A garden city does not need foundations. A wall does.   Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev 21.14 Notice also that it is possible to view precious stones and the names of the apostles on the foundations.

This viewing would not be possible if the foundations were embedded in the earth under the wall. This leads us to conclude that the foundations are pillars (stele).    Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev 21.14  And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones Rev 21.19a

Note 4 -- The Pearls, Precious Stones, and Golden Streets of New Jerusalem

The Bible clearly states that New Jerusalem is adorned with huge pearls, streets of pure gold, and all manner of precious stones.    And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones Rev 21.19a And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. Rev 21.21

God can create real pearls of any size that suits His purpose."   But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'' Mt 19.26 The Bible clearly states that God adorned New Jerusalem as a bride for her husband.  = Pearly Bride of the Lamb, Jesus.

We humans give jewels and gold to those we love. Why should we have any difficulty in believing that God gives such gifts to His loved ones (the citizens of New Jerusalem)?   Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev 21.2

The only reason that there are precious stones, gold, and other beautiful things on the earth is because God created them.    You see beauty throughout God's creation -- butterfly wings, crystalline snowflakes, flowers, multi-colored fish and birds -- beauty!

God enjoys beauty. That's why He created jewels and other beautiful things on earth. And that's why He created jewels and other beautiful things in Heaven.

Why should anyone have even the slightest difficulty in understanding that?

Post Script - When you thank God for (e.g.) bringing a beautiful newborn baby into your family and heart, remember -- a dog or a tree would not recognize the beauty of that baby. But YOU do. –the image of God.

Thus, you should thank God, not only for the child's beauty, but for the fact that He vested you with the discernment to see and relish the beauty of that child.

POINT IS - your very ability to recognize and enjoy beauty, to relish the perfume of flowers, to be transcended by music, ALL are gifts from God to you.
