Pearl in the Bible -

(37)Jesus answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; (38) The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; (39) The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. (40)As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

(41)The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; (42)And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (43)Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

(44)Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. (45)Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: (46)Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.        Mt 13:37-46

The Pearl-

A phrase from one of the parables of Jesus; he compares the journey to heaven to a search for fine pearls conducted by a merchant, “who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” The expression has come to mean anything that is very valuable.

(계 21:21) And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE

Very similar to the parable of the Hidden Treasure is this one of the merchant seeking goodly pearls. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchantman seeking goodly pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it."

In the picture we see the merchant on the sea-shore, where he has waited for the landing of these sailors from another country. He asks them if they have any goodly pearls for sale, and one man opens his box and takes out this "pearl of great price." It is just the kind of pearl the merchant had been seeking, so he quickly produces his two bags of gold and offers them to the man for his pearl.

But the man smiles. "What! part with so large and so beautiful a pearl for two bags of gold?" He could not think of it. The pearl is again placed in its box, and the merchant has to go away disappointed. But the longing to have that pearl is too great. A thought occurs to him. He will go home and sell all that is his, and the money he shall thus obtain, added to his two bags of gold, will surely buy the precious jewel.

And so it is with men when they seek that pearl of pearls, the forgiveness of God. They will give up a great deal in order to obtain it, but they find that God requires them to give up everything that is sinful or worldly. And if their hearts are really set upon obtaining it, they will do as this merchant did, and part with everything that would hinder them from coming to God, or walking in the way that leads to heaven.

"The pearl owes nothing to man. It is absolutely a gift of nature on which man cannot improve."
..quoted from the great gemologist of the late 19th century, George Fredrick Kunz.

Black pearls in shell

Pearls represent virtues and people ...many also have been named for the pearl.

The pearl in Judeo-Christian recordings refer to the pearl as symbol of

Purity

Harmony

Humility

St. Augustine... after realizing that the pearl was not among the gems which signified the twelve apostles...
...declared that the pearl was reserved in this manner by God for
Jesus Christ Himself

This idea makes a lot of sense, when one thinks of the correlation between these two verses:
John 10:9 "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture." And:  Revelations 21:21 "And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: each one of the gates was a single pearl."

Jesus = door=Pearl gates of heaven

This fits well, as Jesus claimed to be the way into heaven...John 14:6 "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man comes unto the Father, but through Me.

Yet another symbol for which the pearl is used is for Heaven as in the following verse: "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls." Matthew 13:45         Since the PEARL, represents Jesus Christ himself...and Heaven, it indeed also represents the: ZENITH OF QUALITY AND GOOD TASTE.

N.B.> **In general terms, the zenith is the direction pointing directly "above" a particular location; that is, it is one of two vertical directions at the location, orthogonal to a horizontal flat surface there. The concept of "above" is more specifically defined in astronomy, geophysics and related sciences (e.g., meteorology) as the vertical direction opposite to the net gravitational force at a given location

Have you ever thought there should be more to life. the Pearl of Great Price.

In Matthew 7:6, in the famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, "Don't cast your pearls before swine." You can read about three aspects of this--literal, spiritual and creative--on the "Pearls Before Swine" - Pearls as Symbol

You may also enjoy reading about Pearls in the Bible.

Salvador Assael, of Assael International says, "I find with pearls, more than with any other gem, endless parables for life itself." And he adds, "The black pearl of Polynesia captures the rainbow after the storm. It is a symbol of hope for all humanity."

Special thanks to Joan Younger for her Book of Pearls for some of this information.

The first mention of pearls in the Bible - Job 28:18
“Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned: And the acquisition of wisdom is above that of pearls."(New American Standard)

NOTE: In the beginning chapter 28 Job is describing the treasures found in the earth and how men seek them out…for example: iron is taken from the dust (:2); copper is smelted from rock (:2); rocks are a source for sapphires(:6); dust contains gold….BUT…where can wisdom be found? (:12) It’s as though Job is saying…pearls are the most valuable, sought after gem…but wisdom is even more precious.

Second mention of pearls in the Bible Pearl=Margarites (in Greek) -Matthew 7:6

“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

NOTE: Truth is precious, Jesus is precious...we must not unwittingly expose ourselves to people violently opposed to the gospel.

Third mention of pearls in the Bible - Matthew 13:45
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls.”

NOTE: Matthew is using a variety of similes for the kingdom of heaven…a pearl is a perfect simile because a fine pearl is a valuable treasure that needs no polishing or cutting by man. It comes to us complete and lustrous created by God through nature, as is the kingdom of heaven, which only God could create and perfect.

Fourth mention of pearls in the Bible - Matthew 13:46
“and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

NOTE: It is easy to part with things when you find something better. Before I take an international trip I often have a large garage sale…funny how easy it is to sell things when my eye is on a trip of more value.
Finding Jesus, the Pearl of Great Price, is worth everything. We should let nothing hold us back from following Him.

Fifth mention of pearls in the Bible - I Timothy 2:9
“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments;”

NOTE: Boy, what would Queen Elizabeth I (the “Pearl Queen”) say about this? I understand she even had fake pearls made in abundance so she could sew them on to all her fancy dresses. To her they symbolized power. In this verse, apostle Paul is exhorting godly women to not worry so much about outward power, but inward godliness (which, of course, is very powerful).

Sixth mention of pearls in the Bible - Revelations 17:4
“And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality,”

NOTE: This woman, a symbol of Babylon, clothed with the riches of the world…but only for herself…not sharing even a tithe with the needy. Let us be careful, that in our wealth of stocks and bonds and worldly possessions…we give of it to help those less fortunate.

Seventh mention of pearls in the Bible - Revelations 18:12
“cargoes of gold and silver and precious stones and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, and every kind of citron wood and every article of ivory and every article made from very costly wood and bronze and iron and marble,”

NOTE: These are the cargo contents of merchants of the earth, who work in conjunction with Babylon and mourn when business goes awry.
Does this mean “things” are bad? No, merchandise isn’t “bad,” but greed is…very, very bad. Priorities must be straight: Love God, love one another…two simple guidelines to go by.

Eighth mention of pearls in the Bible - Revelations 18:16
“Saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothe in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls;..”

NOTE: Pearls…again listed among the treasures of the earth…valuable and sought after. Is it wrong to have treasure and wealth? Should our goal be to be poor? Certainly not…but the danger lies in hording and gaining to the detriment of others. Plus, the most over-looked habit is…tithing. Tithing...a simple 10%...not much when one looks at the benefits.

God doesn’t even require as much as Uncle Sam…and although we don’t like paying taxes…we do have benefits from them…just remember that next time you drive on a highway. But God’s benefits are even greater, in Malachi 3:10, He says he will pour out so many blessings that we won’t even have room for them all.

Ninth mention of pearls in the Bible - Revelations 21:21
“And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”

NOTE: This is my favorite Bible verse about pearls. What a great verse about to end with. Can you imagine gigantic pearls as gates? I’ve tried to picture them in my mind and really can’t. How would they be hinged? Would they be sliced and carved? No, I don’t think so. But they’d be lustrous, round, clean surfaced, and without spot or blemish…something worth seeing.

Pearl

(Heb. gabish). The Hebrew word in Job 28:18 probably means "crystal." Pearls, however are frequently mentioned in the New Testament, Mt 13:45; 1Ti 2:9; Re 17:4; 21:21 and were considered by the ancients among the most precious of gems, and were highly esteemed as ornaments. The kingdom of heaven is compared to a "pearl of great price."

In Mt 7:6 pearls are used metaphorically for anything of value, or perhaps more especially for "wise sayings." The finest specimens of the pearl are yielded by the pearl oyster (Avicula margaritifera), still found in abundance in the Persian Gulf and near the coasts of Ceylon, Java and Sumatra. The oysters grow in clusters on rocks in deep water, and the pearl is found inside the shell, and is the result of a diseased secretion caused by the introduction of foreign bodies, as sand, etc., between the mantle and the shell.

They are obtained by divers trained to the business. March or April is the time for pearl fishing. A single shell sometimes yields eight to twelve pearls. The size of a good Oriental pearl varies from that of a pea to about three times that size. A handsome necklace of pearls the size of peas is worth $15,000. Pearls have been valued as high as $200,000 or $300,000 apiece.--ED.)

Pearls
The English word pearl originated from the Latin word for pearl, perla. It is used to translate the Hebrew word of the Old Testament, pronounced gaw-beesh, which means to freeze, or a crystal, but is used to refer to pearls, and the Greek word of the New Testament, pronounced mar-gar-ee-tace, which means pearl (the English name Margaret originated from the Greek word for pearl). Pearls were known throughout Bible History and are also mentioned in Prophecy. "The price of wisdom is above pearls" - by Wayne Blank

Pearls are produced inside the shell of certain clams or oysters and are much valued as a jewel. The iridescent inside surface of the shell is known as "mother of pearl" and is itself regarded as valuable, as in this example of "mother-of-pearl and precious stones" in a Persian king's palace.

"And when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa the capital, both great and small, a banquet lasting for seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace. There were white cotton curtains and blue hangings caught up with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars, and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and precious stones. Drinks were served in golden goblets, goblets of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king." (Esther 1:5-7 RSV)

Pearls are however used most frequently in the Scriptures within an object lesson, as in this example of how Godly wisdom is far more valuable than pearls.
"Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls." (Job 28:17-18 RSV)

Jesus Christ used pearls as an analogy for Godly wisdom (and the time available to teach those who truly want to learn the way to salvation) that is not to be wasted on those who have proven themselves to defiantly reject God's offer of salvation. "Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you." (Matthew 7:6 RSV)

Christ also used "fine pearls" as an analogy for the way of truth that leads to salvation on the Judgment Day (see When Will You Be Judged?).
"The Son of man will send His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth [see also Baptism Of Fire]. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." (Matthew 13:41-50 RSV)

Christians are to adorn themselves with humility and truth.
"I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion." (1 Timothy 2:8-10 RSV)

In contrast, the great religious harlot (the Church of Rome) and her daughter harlots (most of the "Protestant" churches who maintain nearly all of the same false doctrines as Rome) are "bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her fornication," as they have been, and yet will again, be "drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus."

"Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who is seated upon many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and with the wine of whose fornication the dwellers on earth have become drunk."

And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her fornication; and on her forehead was written a name of mystery: "Babylon the great, mother of harlots and of earth's abominations."

And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." (Revelation 17:1-6 RSV) "Babylon" isn't just religious confusion (in the original language, Babylon literally means confusion); it also applies to most of the world's dead-end political and economic systems.
"And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and were wanton with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning; they will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, "Alas! alas! thou great city, thou mighty city, Babylon! In one hour has thy judgment come."

And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo any more, cargo of gold, silver, jewels and pearls, fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet, all kinds of scented wood, all articles of ivory, all articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.

The fruit for which thy soul longed has gone from thee, and all thy dainties and thy splendor are lost to thee, never to be found again!" The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, "Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, bedecked with gold, with jewels, and with pearls!" (Revelation 18:9-16 RSV)

Pearl from irritation – Jesus & disciples from suffering

In Matthew 13:45-46, Jesus uses a strange image, the pearl. What's interesting, as Chuck Missler pointed out, is that oysters are not kosher! Deuteronomy 14:10 The Jews didn't value them much; they were a uniquely gentile possession.

Matthew 13:45,46
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

We see here an image of the Church. The pearl is the only "jewel" that is the result of a living organism. It grows as a response to irritation. And it is removed from its place of growth to become an item of adornment! –gem!

Frames of Reference: The church has grown from an irritation - Jesus taking on our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). He endured so much pain and grief He prayed three times for His cup to pass Him by (Matthew 26:36-42). But the church will grow and eventually be removed from it's place of growth (the harpazo).-rapture.

(20)Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. (21)For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.                                           II Cor 5:20-21

The Pearl of Great Price
Pearls, sometimes called the Queen of Gems, have been known and used as jewelry for more than six thousand years. Although classified as gems pearls are not actually minerals. They are made from living things, namely, mollusks (clams, mussels, oysters, etc.). Pearls are the abnormal growth from a mollusk trying to protect itself from the irritation of a particle of sand or shell. Bothered by this foreign particle the mollusk begins to coat it with layer upon layer of a substance called nacre. Thus a pearl is formed and begins to grow.

The pearl is thus the only jewel formed by an injury to a  living thing. Pearls, unlike, other gems, must be left undivided and uncut to keep their value.
The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.                                 Matthew 13:45-46

God speaks of His Body, the Church, made up of all those who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their only God and Saviour from sin. Here it is likened to a pearl of great price. The Lord Jesus emptied Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2). He gave His very life to purchase a people out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation (Revelation 5:9).

Thus the Church, His Body, is formed by way of an injury to the Son of God. He begins to build His Church, not all at once, but in layers, over centuries of time, starting with the apostles and right up to today. We who have believed are the outermost layer of His Church. When His Pearl is complete He will take it to Himself--Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church. . .
The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. She is His new creation by water and the word.

From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy Bride. With His own blood He bought her and for her life He died.                     --Samuel J. Stone
What a blessed privilege to belong to the ever living, ever loving Lord!
Have you placed your whole trust in Him and Him alone for your soul's salvation?

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.      Acts 4:12
